Class Outlines

Karate Club of UCR Dojo Training Outline

BEGINNING CLASSES

Week 1
Session 1 - Tradition, manner and traditions, basic philosophy and appropriate vocabulary, physical principles, grades & attendance.
Session 2 - Appropriate class manner, expectations and behavior.
Getting dressed (the karate gi).
Stretching and warming-up.
Physical principles - "Focus" and body action: body vibration. Straight punch.

3 techniques - straight punch/ rising block/ front kick

Week 2
Session 1 - Physical principles - Focus and body action: body vibration and body rotation. Reverse Punch.
Session 2 - Physical principles - Focus and body action: body shifting. Lunge Punch. Front-snap kick.

Week 3
Session 1 - Blocking: rising block. Kumite: One-step sparring.
Session 2 - Blocking: middle block and downward block. Kumite: One-step sparring

Week 4
Session 1 - Kata.
Session 2 - Kumite: Three-step sparring

Week 5
Session 1 - Side-stance. Side-snap kick.
Session 2 - Balance breaking (basic throwing).

Week 6
Session 1 - Review of basics. Self-defense against grabbing.
Session 2 - Review of basics. Self-defense against choking.

Week 7
Session 1 - Elbow techniques.
Session 2 - Elbow and knee techniques.

Week 8
Session 1 - Back-stance.
Session 2 - Open hand techniques.

Week 9
Session 1 - Back-thrust kick.
Session 2 - Back-thrust kick application.

Week 10
Session 1 - Review. Exam preparation.
Session 2 - Defense from multiple opponents.

 

   



INTERMEDIATE CLASSES

Week 1: Review of basics and dojo manner/Back stance/ knife hand block
Week 2 & 3: Stances and shifting/ introduce new katas
Week 4: Kicking - snapping
Week 5: Kicking - thrusting

Week 6: Punching
Week 7: Blocking - hard
Week 8: Blocking - soft
Week 9: Striking - snap
Week 10: Striking - locking


ADVANCED CLASSES

Week 1: Review of basics and dojo manner/ Stance/ Kata
Week 2: Stances/ body dynamics
Week 3: Punching - straight
Week 4: Punching - curved and other
Week 5: Kicking - snapping
Week 6: Kicking - thrusting
Week 7: Blocking - hard
Week 8: Blocking - soft
Week 9: Striking - snap
Week 10: Striking - locking


FALL SPARRING CLASS

Note: This is an excellent time for students to start in the competition class. This class is for advanced students or by instructor approval. Our main focus this quarter is applying the basic skills, strategies and tactics, we developed last quarter.
